Tether Holdings Ltd., the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, has entered into a strategic partnership with South American agribusiness leader Adecoagro S.A. through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The collaboration, announced on Tether's official platform, aims to establish a Bitcoin mining pilot in Brazil that combines Adecoagro's renewable energy infrastructure with Tether's digital asset expertise.
Adecoagro, a Nasdaq-listed company operating across Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, currently manages more than 230 megawatts of renewable energy capacity. The pilot project will utilize Tether's proprietary Mining OS platform, with plans to open-source the software in subsequent months. Adecoagro's Independent Committee has formally reviewed and approved the initiative as part of the company's digital asset diversification strategy.
'This partnership represents an innovative approach to valorizing our sustainable energy assets,' stated Mariano Bosch, Adecoagro's CEO and Co-Founder. The project is designed to provide pricing stability for the company's spot market energy sales while gaining Bitcoin exposure. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino emphasized the initiative aligns with their sustainable mining strategy, saying, 'This demonstrates how agricultural energy production can integrate with advanced digital infrastructure.'
The proposed mining operation could potentially deploy thousands of ASIC miners across Adecoagro's facilities, achieving approximately 1.6% of Bitcoin's current network hash rate. With 230 MW of renewable energy capacity, the project could generate an estimated 6.9 EH/s, positioning it among the world's largest industrial-scale mining operations.
In parallel developments, Tether has expanded its African operations through a partnership with Zanzibar's eGovernment Authority. The collaboration aims to enhance financial inclusion and blockchain education in the region, including curriculum integration in local institutions and stablecoin adoption through ZanMalipo, Zanzibar's government digital payments platform.
Tether currently holds over 100,000 BTC (valued at $10+ billion) and projects to become the world's largest Bitcoin miner by 2025.
